St Mary’s man John is one of the most gifted ever to play for Sligo
John Kent from Ballydoogan tells Gerry McLaughlin about his glittering career on the field, being a PRO and manager with St Mary’s, and running his popular Grattan Street sports shop.
When Sligo Gaels talk about who was one of the most gifted and graceful players to ever wear the county jersey, the name of John Kent will be right at the top of the list.
For in his prime, there were few better forwards for St Mary’s, Sligo or indeed Connacht when the self-effacing Ballydoogan boy was young and really invincible.
Kent had superb balance, speed, first touch, vision, finish and the all-important desire to be the very best he could be in a glittering career that went on for around 20 years from 1975 as a fresh-faced St Mary’s star to 1996 when he won the last of his nine Sligo Senior Championship medals.
St Mary’s have won 11 county titles in all – a great record.
